Application Refused. What next?

Back to the FutureNot so hot off the press, but the good news is that the Realis proposal was officially rejected by the development committee yesterday. There was no debate, it was a straightforward ratification of the planning report’s recommendations. The development was refused for many reasons including traffic congestion, over-provision of car-parking, pollution, trees and boundary walls in a Conservation area, pedestrian safety, proximity to school… the list goes on.

The big question is “what next?”.

The controversial planning application has highlighted the fact that this parade of shops is no longer being properly maintained. The landlord clearly wants to sell the site and many people would like to see some sort of development here.

There is an opportunity to take a more community-led approach with what happens next. How do we take this forward and encourage suitable development within the area, both for this site and others? We will continue to keep you up to date with relevant information and, in the meantime, celebrate  and use the great shops and resources Corstorphine already has.

Planning officer recommends that proposal is turned down…

signpost2Some very good news at last. The planning department report has recommended that the St. John’s Road/Manse Road proposal should be turned down. However this is a very cautious “hooray” as the development committee can still overturn the recommendation. We feel that there would have to be a very good reason to push the development through though, as it fails council policy measures on many counts. Let’s hope the committee make the right decision on Wednesday 21st.  If you want to read the full report it’s on the portal under documents, or you can look at it here: 15_02898_FUL-DM_SUB-COMMITTEE_REPORT-3208816

Many thanks to everyone who lodged their comments with the council. There were 455 objections and only 11 in support of this proposed supermarket.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Committee Meeting Wednesday 21st October

oak leaf for webHard to believe, but it’s almost a year since the Realis proposal first came to our attention – thank you to everyone who has managed to keep up the opposition to this insensitive development.

As predicted, the 181-195 St. John’s Road proposal is going to the meeting of the Development Management Sub-committee on Wednesday 21st October. The meeting starts at 10am and takes place at the City Chambers, High Street, Edinburgh EH1 1YJ.

Members of the public are welcome to attend and it would be great to demonstrate public concern by getting as many people as possible in the room.

We have also been advised that emails to individual committee members can make a real difference in terms of showing local opposition.  Committee members are not allowed to enter into discussion about the development, but are allowed to read and acknowledge the emails. The list of  Councillors who sit on the committee can be found on the Council website along with their email addresses: http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/directory_record/626744/development_management_sub-committee.

The Case Officer’s report – which will make a recommendation as to whether the development should be supported or not – should be available on the planning portal from Thursday 15th October. Search on 15/02898/FUL and look under “Documents”.
